Roadside Pollinator Project - July, 2017
WJFW-TV Channel 12 was in Three Lakes in July interviewing Baerbel Ehrig, Oneida County Pollinator Project Coordinator. Hear what she had to say. Click on the link here for more: http://cdn.field59.com/WJFW/1499725934-709c7672e78ea692f9f8530628c6c4fdda070e39_fl9.mp4
The History of the Project
Pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, perpetuate $40 billion worth of products in the United States each year; but unfortunately, their populations have been declining due to disease, pesticide use, and habitat loss.
Jean Hansen (1952-2016), former Oneida County Conservationist, knew pollinators were extremely important and worked passionately to lay the groundwork for pollinator habitat along road right-of-ways. Her vision began by pulling together a town, an outdoor school, committees, road crews, businesses, and countless volunteers to build the Roadside Pollinator Habitat Improvement Project. Sadly, she did not see her vision become a reality, but would be proud of Oneida County Land and Water Conservation and the Town of Three Lakes as they partnered to begin building a pollinator community.

Pollinators in the Northwoods
On August 26, 2016, the Roadside Pollinator Habitat Improvement Project, an Oneida County/Three Lakes partnership, hosted a workshop at the Reiter Center in Three Lakes. This project was made possible by a grant from Lumberjack RC&D and a monetary donation from the Three Lakes Winery.
With about 25 people present, the workshop was well received by the general public of the region. People came from Rhinelander, Presque Isle, Gleason, Arbor Vitae, Rhinelander, Lake Tomahawk, and Three Lakes. Two keynote speakers were on hand:
