Master Gardeners of the North
Plant Sale
featuring Native Plants and more
After a two-year absence, Master Gardeners of the North will be holding their annual plant sale. The plant sale will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Stevensport Square in downtown Rhinelander. The sale will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will end at 3:00 p.m. It will be in conjunction with Art Fair on the Courthouse Lawn and the other events taking place in downtown Rhinelander that day.
This year’s sale will be slightly different from the previous years with precautions being taken to prevent the spread of invasive jumping worms. The Master Gardeners will be selling more sustainable perennial native plants along with vegetables, herbs, annuals, and houseplants all grown in sterile soils. Volunteers will be on hand to offer advice and help in choosing your plants.
Jumping worms have been found in both Vilas and Oneida Counties. All gardeners should be aware of the threat of this species of worm originally from Asia, which can alter soil quality and make it inhospitable for some plants and animals. We will have information available on this invasive worm in hopes of educating the public.

Native trees & shrubs provide more food for birds.

Planting native trees and shrubs in your yard can really help songbirds. In a study of the Carolina chickadee in the metropolitan DC area, researchers found that native trees and shrubs support much more 'bird food', such as caterpillars, than non-natives do.
