Aquatic Invasive Species Program Assistant

Oneida County Land & Water Conservation Department’s Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program is seeking an AIS Program Assistant Limited Term Employee (LTE) to join AIS Team for the summer of 2023. This position is a great way to help protect our beautiful lakes, rivers, and wetlands from the spread of AIS and their impact to our waterways. Applicant will gain valuable, hands-on, field experience that will benefit future careers such as water resources, natural resources, conservation, or environmental education.

Duties include, but are not limited to: 
  • Assist the AIS Coordinator: Implement AIS projects within the Oneida County Land & Water Resource Management Plan. 
  • Assist with AIS monitoring and Management: AIS prevention, surveys, rapid response, control, management, removal, data collection, data entry, and reporting; purple loosestrife biocontrol; AIS early detection and water quality monitoring on 15 waterbodies; habitat restoration; citizen science projects; AIS signage inventory and installation; create professional level monitoring reports and mapping; maintain, prepare, and decontaminate field equipment and county canoe; assist the DNR with monitoring projects as requested.
  • Assist with AIS Education, Prevention and Outreach: AIS education and outreach events with lake groups and the public; student field events; Annual Northwoods Invasive Species Poster Contest; Stewardship Awards Banquet; bait shop and marina outreach; statewide AIS campaigns; develop outreach material and newsletters, update website, and report activities; conduct Clean Boats Clean Waters watercraft inspections. 

Applicant will gain: Hands-on field experience in AIS identification, prevention, monitoring and management; aquatic plant identification, water quality, GPS and mapping; educational outreach, team work and collaboration; and connecting with Oneida County’s beautiful freshwater resources.
 
Qualifications:
  • Qualified individuals must be 18 or older, have a high school degree or equivalent, and a valid WI driver’s license. A reliable vehicle and proof of vehicle insurance is required.
  • Must be able to work with a team and independently.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the public and coworkers in a friendly, positive manner.
  • Good work ethic, be flexible, and make good independent decisions based on practices, rules, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate from remote-work sites.
  • Comfortable with spreadsheets and data entry.
  • Comfortable conducting field work in/on water, a wide range of aquatic habitats and terrain, in variable weather conditions, canoe/kayak, and snorkeling.
  • Prior experience with AIS, aquatic ecology, plant identification, or GPS is preferred, but not necessary. Training will be provided.
